Have I met you?
Feb 3 2008, 2:39 PM EST | Post edited: Feb 3 2008, 2:39 PM EST
I've noticed that this is a new site, with potential to meet people from all over the country, and then some. As of today, there are only 5 members here. Probably won't be difficult to get more, but who are we? Instead of visiting everyone's profile individually, we could post here.
Questions to include?
Where are you from? State, school...
What is your interest in archives? What got you started?
What is your ideal job?
One area that you'd like to do research in.
Anything else you'd like to add.
Do you find this valuable?

And I don't mind being the first.
Right now, I am a student at UW-Madison, in Wisconsin.
I got a Spanish major and Photography and Psychology minors at UW-LaCrosse, WI. I had always wanted to be a librarian, but I also realized that I wanted to continue working with photos.
My ideal job would be a photo archivist or conservation/preservationist in a large academic/research institution.
Some research I would like to do includes something along the lines of pros and cons of digitizing photo collections. In another direction, Can MPLP be effectively applied to unique, visual materials?
Other: I like cats, online computer games and I've seen the ocean once and was impressed with how powerful it was.

YAY! Thanks, Rachel for starting this.

I attend UCLA and am a second year in their MLIS program. I got interested in archives after being exposed to poor recordkeeping practices at a school I was teaching at.
Currently, my interests seem to be all over the place. But I'm very intrigued to learn more about archival education practices and questioning how programs determine what is successful or not, and furthermore, in maintaining diversity, what's the process after the content of a program has been determined. I think my ideal options for work would either be working with the entertainment industry (a studio's archive) and/or working at the academic level as well.
I think I'd like to eventually own a wii as well. That would be nice. I need more tools for distraction and procrastination.

Hey there. I'm in school at the University of Pittsburgh. I got started in information sciences after being sued for intellectual property violations actually.

To be honest, I'm not sure what my dream job is. I'm looking forward (with a bit of trepidation) to seeing whats out there as I have a lot of interests.

I'm really into research surrounding access to government documents, user studies, and access policies.

Back to paper-writing!

Erin

Hi,

I live in Oregon (which does not have any library schools) and I'm in the Oregon-7 cohort of Emporia State University which is located in Kansas. Emporia flies professors in from Kansas who teach intensive weekend classes held in Portland (100 miles from where I live ) one to three times a month and combine that with an Internet component. Other instructors also teach archives classes. Right now I'm taking a class taught by Mary Jo Pugh. :-)

I am interested in reference and teaching. My interest in archives began with an internship I did at the Oregon State Library researching and cataloging photographs, postcards, maps, letters, etc.

My ideal job would be as a reference archivist in an academic library. I currently work as an on-call reference and instructional librarian at Oregon State University and sometimes I work at the archives reference desk. :-) I'd also love to be an itinerant archivist--traveling to different states and working in various kinds of archives in different capacities for short periods of time. I am intrigued by the idea of obtaining a Ph.D. and teaching and writing.

I am interested in doing research on how to reach under-served communities, particularly those which are non-Western.

I'm very happy to meet all of you! :-)

Hi there!

I just learned about this site through ErinMack and decided to join. I am also an archives student at the University of Pittsburgh. My interest in archives happened by accident so to speak. I began an internship in the summer of 2004 at the Bucks County Historical Society in Doylestown, PA, thinking that I was going to be working in a museum (as that was my main interest). When I found out I'd be doing archival work, I was a bit confused but went along with it and have no regrets. I have always had an interest in history but never wanted to teach. Being an archivist is a way for me to keep in touch with history and not have to teach.

My archival interests are also all over the place like OTA stated. I really enjoy working with others, so I look forward to reference work, user studies, and archival advocacy. I wish to work in some capacity for the National Archives, either in DC or a presidential library.

Interesting. I am writing a research paper for John Fleckner (Dear Mary Jane) about the state of archival education. I would love to get some thoughts from students of other programs.

Hi everyone,

I am also a student at the University of Pittsburgh, which is also where I did my undergrad in History and Classics. Like M.Gorzalski I enjoy history but didn't want to teach. I was describing what I wanted to do and my fiance saw a flyer for the archives program and after a bit of research I applied for a job at the university's archives service center. I've been working there for almost two years now.

I am interested in Labor Archives as well as establishing archival collections for small non-profit organizations. I am in the process of developing a collection for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.

My ideal job would be at an academic archive, hopefully in or near Pittsburgh.

Hi all!
My name is Daniel, and I'm (most of the time) a doctoral student in English at Brandeis University, which is next to Boston. I'm also doing my MLIS at San Jose State U, online, and along with Robynne am half of the editorial board this year for Chapters and Loose Papers. I'm very interested in the very old and the pretty new; that's about as brief as I can make it. I talk a little more about my research interests in my profile here, but I just wanted to post and say that I look forward to your submissions to C&LP - let us know what's going on in your area and your chapter! Also please feel free to send us other essays of interest, reports, or opinion pieces. We'll be putting out three issues this year, so plenty of room to let us hear your voice!

Hello everyone! I'm a graduate student in the MLiS (masters of Library and Information Science) program at the University of Washington, Seattle. I have a lifelong interest in archival issues. Both of my parents are very interested in history and museums and my mother is a historian and author. I have used archives in professional contexts when working on contract as a researcher.
I'm fortunate to be able to work with archival film materials (1930s-1970s primarily) in the film archive at my university. I have also taken courses in preservation and archival practice, although it would be fair to say that most of my academic work deals with library practice and information management subjects.
My other interests include metadata and digital libraries.
I joined this wiki a while ago, and look forward to becoming more involved.

Hello to everyone!

I'm in my first year of the MLIS program at the University of North Texas in Denton.

I'm currently working at a local film archive specifically working with historical Russian footage. My undergrad degree was in Russian Language and History, and my dream job is to work in any archive dealing with Russian related objects.

Hi,

I'm currently a MSIS student at the University of Albany in New York. I have lived in NY my whole life, and went to undergrad at SUNY Potsdam. I have my BA in History with a museum studies minor.

I got started in archives when I was working on my museum studies minor. I knew I liked what I was doing, but would rather be doing it with historical documents, not art. I did an internship on campus in the college archives, and I fell in love with it :-)

My Ideal job would be as an archivist to the Beatles. Seeing as that won't happen, i would love to work in almost any kind of archives and i will be happy.

I am also the president of the SAA Student Chapter at U Albany.

Hi Ringrll,
What's your name? Thanks for posting! Have a look at our old issues, & I'm hoping since you're President of the SAA SC at Albany that you got my email of a few weeks ago asking for each chapter to write us up a little submission/update to be printed in the fall issue of Chapters and Loose Papers. Our deadline is 20 Nov & we're welcome all kinds of other submissions too - tell your chapter members! We really look forward to reading your stuff. :-)
